Sinhala and Hindu New Year
This year’s Awurudu—and the Sinhala and Hindu New Year—felt different in the most meaningful way.
As a mother to my little one, just 1 year and 3 months old, I found a quiet sense of pride and purpose in the simple things I created at home. It wasn’t about putting together a grand or picture-perfect table. Instead, it was about the love behind each dish, the effort, and the intention.
These would be cozy, warm, and loving memories in our life one day!
I spent time in the kitchen preparing kokis, welithalapa, kevum, a soft coffee cake, and of course, kiribath to mark the New Year. Some things didn’t turn out perfectly, and that’s okay. What mattered was that it was ours—made with care, shared with love, and filled with warmth.
More than anything, I realized why this meant so much to me. I’m not continuing these traditions just for the sake of it. I’m doing it for my family, for the love we share, and for my baby to grow up surrounded by these little moments. Even if he’s too young to remember now, I truly believe these experiences quietly shape a sense of belonging, culture, and home. My love language is always mingled with food. When my loved ones smile at things I prepared, I am so happy.
It also meant so much to have my husband right there with me—especially helping with the kokis (which definitely takes patience!). Also, as a family, we did everything as a team. My husband and I are always a good team, built on different capabilities. Those moments reminded me that these traditions aren’t just about food. They’re about togetherness, partnership, and building something meaningful as a family.
This Awurudu wasn’t about perfection or presentation. It was about heart. And because of that, it felt more special than ever.
