Are you missing food from home? what foods do you miss most?
This is a widespread grievance, and most of my college friends, including myself, live out of the home. The grievances are never-ending and so touching. Missing something you love to have is such a great pain. We are missing good weather, family, and familiar surroundings, basically, out of all, we are missing food from home.
My question is, if you have been abroad, what food will be on your list as soon as you get back? I have a bucket list. Indeed, the things I plan to do once I set foot in my motherland. The proper taste of homie food will be at the top of the list always. I admire my “missing food from home”, I love how colorful, how varied their texture is, and how authentic the smell is.
There are days I am sitting on the couch and imagining my home foods. A mother-made hot plate of white rice along with white rice is in my dreams!! Why do most of us miss food from home this much? it seems to be a considerable question. I feel that homemade dishes are a blend of personal significance, memories, warmth, love, and familiar flavors all in one table. So homemade is always special.
Many of us are living somewhere other than where we were born. We are residing in different geographical backgrounds along with different cultures. A mobile life sometimes. Living abroad is a choice, true! but it is not always a piece of cake.
We spent our life having traditional Sri Lankan spicy rice and curry in a super hot way. There are hundreds of vegetable varieties, fruits, and greeneries. so each meal was styled with various types of vegetables. We hardly use pre-cooked food items, and our refrigerators are full of fresh vegetables, fruits, and greeneries.
My mother prepares a green salad (in Sinhala “Mellum”) without fail, mixing all healthy green leaves (most of them are having herbal value) from our garden along with fresh coconut and salt. What a heavenly taste!!
yes, true carrots, brinjals, and cabbages are frequent here, but my heart always looks for something that Japanese markets do not have. Thanks to some Sri Lankan and East Asian communities, we consume a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables we used to have while in our mother country. So shopping at an Asian food shop is always a moist sensation.
Japan is indeed a country with one of the best foods in the world. But I am missing my authentic cravings. The evening snacks are Sri Lankan roasted bread, Vienna rolls, all types of rolls, and buns filled with spicy stuff are amazing. Sweets!!. if you have a real sweet tooth, give it a try with authentic Sri Lankan sweets. You will never worry. We always love both sweet and savory.
After saying all, I would love to sum up a few I am missing badly by now.
Polos, jack, breadfruit curries, Highland chocolate milk drink, which comes in an awesome transparent glass bottle, Sri Lankan King coconut, Fab lamprais …
Honestly, I know that, I can’t wrap up the list easily but I have to.
So do you have any missing food from home? Love to hear it!!
