South Indian vibe to my dinner table
Last weekend, I made one of my favorite dinner at home — thosai, wade and ulundu wade. Just thinking about it makes me happy! I have tried both thosai and wade in my little Japanese kitchen. But this time for the very first time I tried uludu wade.
I finally found ulundu at a Asian shop after months of looking. Honestly, I didn’t realize how much I missed these flavors until I got them back into my kitchen. There is something so comforting about eating food that reminds you of home. I have no words to say my feelings.
When I was in Sri Lanka, I used to buy South Indian food quite often. I do not know how I got used to love these South Indian flavors. Truly, I became the person who introduced these little food habits to my family, too. But I can remember my Amma prepare Thosai very often. I’ve always preferred thosai over Sri Lankan hoppers. I know many Sri Lankans love hoppers more than thosai, but I guess I’m one of those people who goes the other way around. 😅 We all have our own little food preferences, don’t we?
All these foods are originally from South India, look at the beauty of cultures, and in fact foods make people together.

Living in Japan, these familiar flavours aren’t always easy to find. Sometimes, I have to wait for months until I come across the right ingredients. So, when I finally found that ulundu, it felt like a small but very happy discovery.
And yes, I made everything at home, even with my little boy around. There was just a lot to do, a little one to look after, and a meal I really wanted to make. But somehow, these are the moments I enjoy most. Preparing something familiar, bringing a little piece of home to our dinner table, and sharing the food I have loved for years with my family

wade
You know, sometimes, happiness is simply a plate of hot thosai, crispy wade, and the feeling that, for a little while, you are back home. 🤍 Anyone away from home knows it.
