Kare Raisu, For busy Moms

Kare Raisu

Japanese curry, or Kare Raisu, is different from other Asian curries. It’s thicker, slightly sweet, mildly spiced, and incredibly comforting. The brand I used is similar to popular ones like S&B Foods or House Foods — the kind that comes in ready-made roux cubes.

Actually this was my first time of trying Kare Raisu at home.

 What I Used

  • 1 supermarket curry roux pack
  • 2 potatoes
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 onion
  • Chicken pieces
  • Cooked white rice

 How I Made It

  1. I sautéed onions first until soft and slightly golden.
  2. Added chicken and cooked until lightly browned.
  3. Tossed in chopped carrots and potatoes.
  4. Added water and let everything simmer until the vegetables became tender.
  5. Finally, I added the curry roux cubes and stirred until the sauce thickened beautifully.

That’s it — so simple, even for a busy weekday!

I love Japanese curry for family meals. The texture becomes rich and it coats with sticky Japanese rice perfectly.

There’s something satisfying about using a supermarket pack — no complicated spice mixing, no long prep time — yet still ending up with a hearty, homemade dish. As a busy mom, I’m always looking for quick recipes, but I also believe they should be healthy. I do use convenient options like this from time to time, though not every day. I know many busy moms love these kinds of shortcuts because they make life easier. However, I personally prefer fresh, home-cooked meals whenever possible.

But there are times, we also love easy ways. It was hearty and comforting meal.

Have you ever tried Kare Raisu at home?
