Do you really love where you live right now?

Love where you live right now?

This is a question I have been asking myself for quite some time. As I have mentioned before, my roots lie in a beautiful tropical island in the Indian Ocean. Settling in an unfamiliar land is always challenging.

From my birth until 2022, I lived in Sri Lanka. In December 2022, after my marriage, I moved to Japan. My husband and I began our wonderful life journey together here. He was already living in Japan when we first got to know each other.

Today marks three years since I stepped onto this island—moving from one island to another.

We live in a village that has everything we need. It is neither too busy nor too quiet, neither too remote nor too urban. It is a perfect middle-ground kind of living. The neighborhood is very friendly and helpful. One elderly grandfather from our neighborhood once brought a whole collection of books and toys for Hithesh. Whenever I go for a walk with Hithesh, I meet many elderly people who are very fond of him.

One of the most wonderful things I admire here is that there are no stoplights on the island. It feels like a place where we can live without judgment.

I am learning every day. There is always something new for me to learn—whether it is the language or the culture. These feel like beautiful gateways to personal growth. Whatever hardships come my way, even though they can be very challenging without my family by my side, I face them together with my wonderful husband.

Winters are hard. Coming from a tropical country, I was not familiar with cold weather, and winter blues sometimes hit me strongly. But now, I have learned my own ways to deal with them. The seasons teach me how beautiful life is, food teaches me how rich and diverse cultures can be, and the culture itself shows me how wonderful the world truly is.

At present, until we find a daycare for Hithesh, I am taking care of him full-time. Once he starts school, I know I will learn even more in every aspect of life. Of course, I miss my parents, my sister and brother, my talkative sweet niece, my mother’s cooking, and so much more. But the life I am building here feels safe, stable, and good for me.

I am learning everything like an infant—starting from the language itself. It is an indescribable feeling.
