Life gives you so many wonderful things. From time to time, it offers you different challenges. It’s as if the entire universe is trying to teach us something special. So are you ready for it?
I believe in this. The Mantra that goes around the world. “Everything happens for good, and that good thing is the best.” That awful thinking lets you think positively.
I passed both Ordinary Level and Advanced Level with flying colours. Then enrolled in to University of Colombo, Faculty of Law, in Sri Lanka. Practiced as an Attorney-At-Law by profession, nearly five years. While I was studying at university, I completed a Diploma and a Higher Diploma in International Relations conducted by the Bandaranaike Center for International Relations, Sri Lanka. (BCIS) Later on, I wanted to complete my higher education, so I enrolled in to Kotelawala defence University, Rathmalana, Sri lanka for Master of Laws and completed it to. This is my academic journey, what I earned with loads of effort.
I never want to leave my country and I wanted to carry out my professional journey as an Attorney.
However, my fate had designed something else, accordingly, I landed in Japan, after my marriage two and a half years ago. Living in a foreign land is not an easy task. You’re gonna miss a whole lot of things. Your family, what you have built up so far, you cannot express yourself as you wish with language barriers etc…
Curious friends and acquaintances would often reach out, calling or messaging to find out what I was really doing here in Japan. Their questions came with a mix of concern, confusion, and sometimes quiet judgment.
But every time, I answered them with a calm smile—because deep down, I knew this was going to be my journey. And I am exactly where I want to be.
From the very first day I arrived in Japan, I knew—this was a place where I had to learn the language. Back home in Sri Lanka, I never felt that urgency. But something about this magical land made it clear: understanding the language would be key to truly experiencing life here.

Funny enough, I actually wanted to study Japanese way back when I was choosing my subjects for A/Ls. I still remember how excited I was at the thought of learning it, but the classes were just too expensive. It was a dream I had to quietly set aside.
The universe has gifted me a rare opportunity—one that many may never receive. A chance to explore a different world, and to expand my perspective beyond what I ever imagined.
So, I started my journey of learning a new language by myself initially. started learning Japanese on my own—just me, a notebook, and a lot of curiosity. It wasn’t easy, but it felt right.
Starting today, I’d love to share my language learning experience with you as a series. I’m still very much a beginner—an infant in this new language—but I believe there’s value in sharing the small steps, the struggles, and the little victories along the way.
So, if you’re curious about what it’s like to start from scratch in a completely new language, join me with The Journey of Learning a New Language
