Spooky Halloween Dinner Even on Imperfect Day

Halloween Dinner

This Halloween was a very simple one at our home. Not because I didn’t have ideas or didn’t want to celebrate, but because our little boy wasn’t feeling well. He had a common fever, cough, and runny nose, so naturally, our plans had to be a little different this year. Here is some stories of our boy’s sick days, read here

I had imagined doing a few more things, perhaps making some decorations, enjoying little Halloween activities together, and creating those lovely family moments we see everywhere around this time of year. But well, life with a toddler doesn’t always follow our little plans, does it? Read this if you love to see my last year Halloween treat.

Still, I didn’t want to let Halloween pass without doing something special.

I believe family traditions don’t always have to be big celebrations. Sometimes, they are just small things we do together, even when everything isn’t quite perfect. So I decided to keep things simple and prepare a little Halloween-themed meal at home.

Our little Halloween menu included:

  • Potato ghosts – little ghost-shaped potatoes, air-fried until nicely cooked.
  • Ghost rice – a little rice shaped into friendly Halloween ghosts.
  • Japanese kare (curry) – to go along with our ghost rice.

Read here, you will find something really interesting.

  • Sweet potato bats – little bat-shaped pieces made with sweet potato.
  • Ghost bread – bread dipped in a simple milk-and-egg mixture and cooked until soft and golden.

Nothing too fancy, nothing that required hours in the kitchen. Just a few simple ingredients, a little creativity, and some extra effort to make an ordinary meal feel a little more festive.

Of course, our little boy wasn’t at his happiest because of his cold. So this wasn’t one of those picture-perfect Halloween celebrations. There were no elaborate decorations or perfectly planned activities. Just our little family, some homemade Halloween food, and a mother trying to keep a small tradition going.

And honestly, I am learning that this is what family life often looks like.

Some days we have energy for all the things we planned. Other days, we simply manage what we can. Sometimes celebrations are full of laughter and activities, and sometimes they are quieter than expected.

But I don’t think every special moment needs to be perfect to be remembered.

Perhaps when our boy grows up, he won’t remember exactly what we ate or how our little potato ghosts looked. But I hope he grows up surrounded by these small family traditions, the warmth of home, and the feeling that we always tried to make ordinary days a little special.

This Halloween wasn’t a big one, but it was ours. And that is enough. ❤️

A little reminder to myself: We don’t need a perfect life to create beautiful family memories. Sometimes, the simplest moments become our favourite little stories.
