Life After Moving from Law

Hi I am Huvini, This is my story.

Life After Moving from Law

There was a time when I thought I knew exactly what my life would look like.

I was a lawyer in Sri Lanka studied law, completed my master’s degree, worked in the legal field, and built a little life around my career. I never really imagined giving all of that up and starting again somewhere completely unfamiliar.

Then I got married, and life took me to Japan with my loving husband.

I still remember my first time stepping into Narita International Airport. Everything felt so unfamiliar. The language especially. Japanese sounded almost like Greek to me—beautiful, rhythmic, but completely impossible to understand. I had come from a place where I knew who I was.

I was a lawyer knew the language knew the system as well new how things worked. And suddenly, I was a foreigner trying to figure out even the smallest things.

It wasn’t always easy. There were days when I felt Nobody when my husband is not by my side. Starting again from the beginning can be a strange feeling when you have already worked so hard to build something for yourself.

But life, I have slowly learned, doesn’t always take away something just to leave an empty space. Sometimes it makes room for something completely different.

Japan became the beginning of another chapter for me, that helped me to find myself deeply. I became a mother learned a new way of living. I learned to find happiness in very ordinary things—walking through a quiet neighbourhood, cooking something familiar from home, watching the seasons change, discovering little things with my husband, and now seeing the world through our little boy’s eyes.

My life didn’t turn out the way I had planned. But perhaps it turned out in a way I needed.

I still carry the woman I was before Japan with me. The lawyer, the student, the girl who had dreams and worked hard for them. And I’m slowly getting to know this newer version of myself too—the mother, the wife, the foreigner, the woman building something small from a new beginning. I have always loved keeping little memories. So this space has become a kind of digital archive of our life. Nothing too perfect. Just little pieces of our days that I hope to look back on one day.

And perhaps, one day, our little boy will read some of these stories and see what our life was like when he was small.

Maybe he will find a recipe his mother made, a rainy afternoon in Japan, a silly little toddler moment, or a story about how his parents were figuring life out together.

That is one of the reasons I keep writing.

And if you are a woman who has also moved to a foreign country and found herself starting again from the very beginning, I hope you feel a little less alone here. You don’t have to have everything figured out. Sometimes a new life begins quietly—with one suitcase, an unfamiliar language, a little uncertainty, and the hope that somehow, things will be okay.

This is my little corner of that journey.

A life after law and a life I never planned, but have slowly learned to love. Life After Moving from Law
