Something from the Sea and something from the Hill !!

Culture

I do not know why I fell in love with Japanese cuisine this much. Simple carefully designed attractive meals with a few side dishes always cheer me up.

Once I look into the traditional Japanese meal I always remember my childhood reading called “Hari Puduma Iskole” (Totto Chan, The Little Girl at the Window)the Sinhala version, translated by Mr. Leelananda Gamachchi a famous translator in Sri Lanka. The original was a memoir by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi.

The little girl’s obento (the lunch box) is supposed to be filled with something from the sea and something from the hill/ land. What a combination, The exact way how their meal is prepared.

I always incorporate this combination now. I use instant miso soup paste (Please do not judge me. LOL!!) and add both Tofu cubes and see weeds sometimes. Awesome soup with the main meal. Mouthwatering!! All tastes in one meal.

Out of all the side dishes I love the pickle dish, always adds an unbelievable taste to the dish. This might be cucumber slides, kimchi, or daikon radish. The colour it adds is superb and the acid flavour!!!

A well-balanced meal.

It is beyond typical grilled chicken and a whole lot of rice. This cuisine is a little bit of everything I say.
